Welcome to a tale of sex, lust, infidelity and the Eternal Quadrangle in three parts! What’s the Eternal Quadrangle you might ask? Think of the Eternal Triangle and add one!
Still with me? If so, stand by to be shocked by the wanton behaviour of a male polygamous cockatiel. It is a long tale, with twists and turns, but is, I hope, of interest to the reader.
Let us begin. BB is an unprepossessing looking grey cockatiel, now 16 years old. He started out as a baby who had an unfortunate experience on his premature maiden flight and landed in a saucepan of boiling water. He was largely unharmed by the experience apart from losing a couple of toes, but while in the hospital cage recovering he had for company a lovely young lutino girl, Gwenny, with a broken wing, in fact with only half a wing since the break was too bad to be repaired and the end of the wing was removed. Naturally two young things in distress formed a lasting friendship, a very close friendship.
BB the very normal looking Cockatiel
Once they had recovered they joined our flock at home and became an item. Unfortunately for BB, Gwenny had some very strong opinions about "funny business" in fact some very Victorian views on the subject, and, while the two were very much a closely bonded pair, Gwenny made sure that it did not extend to S**, and BB had to remain celibate.
Now celibacy did not sit well with a young and virile male cockatiel but fortunately for BB when he was about 18 months old, we acquired a lovely pearl-pied young lady called Jacki, a delightful and very attractive girl, about 12 months old, and a young girl with a very different outlook to "funny business" to Gwenny - in fact a very modern, even shocking, outlook! It wasn't long before BB was turning more and more often to Jacki to provide that particular comfort that Gwenny refused to provide. In fact it was often a daily occurrence, often even more than once a day.
The very attractive and desirable Jacki
Needless to say Gwenny thoroughly disapproved of such licentious behaviour, and if close enough would march straight over and put an end to it all with a well aimed nip of Jacki's foot, and tell BB just what she thought of it all. This continued for some 6 years, with BB being bonded spiritually with Gwenny and sexually with Jacki! Finally Gwenny decided that enough was enough and she would teach both of them a lesson.
One spring day Gwenny marched into Jacki's cage, chased Jacki out, proceeded to lay an egg, and refused to let Jacki anywhere near her cage. In fact she laid several eggs, proceeded to incubate them, and insisted that BB did his due share of the incubation. Of course the eggs were infertile, due to Gwenny's firm belief in celibacy, however she was doing such a good job of incubating that we swapped two fertile eggs from an aviary pair under her so that all the effort she (and a reluctant BB) were putting into incubation would not go unrewarded.
Needless to say when those two eggs hatched out, Gwenny was supremely happy, and BB was absolutely shocked! He was a smart cockatiel, he knew that immaculate conception is pretty rare amongst cockatiels, and yet there were these two babies.
BB trying to work out how two babies appeared!
To his credit, he did put his doubts aside and help to look after the babies, but he always wondered how on earth two babies emerged when he knew that he had played no part in their conception. Gwenny was the perfect mother, very proud and happy to show them off to any of the other cockatiels who wanted to have a look, any that is except Jacki, who was chased away in no uncertain manner.
BB and Gwenny feeding "their" babies
That's the end of part 1 of the Eternal Quadrangle - part 2 will follow in a day or two.
cheers,
Mike
