Hi Folks, My boy Phoenix did something this morning that I think is fine, but I figured I should check. He was having a play and we had given him a macadamia as reward. After a while (in the middle of lots of play) he started shaking his head and opening his mouth: sort of like a cat coughing up a fur ball but in a galah kind of way. Atfter a while up came some macadamia and he went back to play. It's the first time I've seen it. Is this usual or should I keep him away from nuts? Cheers Joiner

Cheers Joiner I am not a fan of macadamia nuts for parrots, especially Galahs - too rich and high in calories. In fact nuts in general are not good for Galahs. The single biggest problem with galahs is their tendency to get overweight and to develop lipoma tumours - non-malignant fatty tumours. I did a thread about a Galah with the problem a while ago at aussiebirds.proboards.com/thread/7517/fatty-tumours-galahs?page=2 - that bird is still going strong, we passed her on to a friend with several elderly galahs and she has a good life with plenty of scratches. Macadamias are around 75% fat while even cashews are still at 46% fat. A single macadamia just about exceeds the full daily fat intake for a Galah!! It is likely it was just too rich for him and hence he ended up regurgitating it back up. I do use cashews as a reward - but the Alexandrines that mainly get them are much better at tolerating a bit of fat occasionally - I would never use them with a galah. Best find something else to use as a treat for Phoenix - I often use a small bit of an Arnotts Nice biscuit - just a little fingernail sized piece. cheers, Mike
