My budgie book says raw. I guess the same would apply to all species.

Hi Stillsqwarkin, my ringnecks prefer it cooked & slighty warm. They will not eat it raw & from what I know it should be cooked. Perhaps Tim will know more. Cheers Anna

Hi Jenn,
I've been buying 10kg of sweet potatoes every fornight and extol their nutritional value. I feed them raw to all my birds. With that said, I've noticed my smaller birds (specifically finches, budgies, neophemas and cocktiels) tend to have some problem chewing this hard root stock. Maybe par-boil or steam it just to soften it.
Like most fresh produce they should be fed raw...wild birds don't have access to a stove top or oven in the wild. The only times I do cook them slightly is when I'm making a birdy casserole.
Rgds Tim

Lucky birds Tim, my fruit shop was selling sweet potatoes for $4.99 a kilo on Saturday. What do you put into a birdy casserole?

My birdy casserole changes from season to season. The fresh produce which goes into it is very much dependent on what is available at the time. However, I've found that the following ingredients are liked by all:
Rice & Pasta Carrots Potatoes - Sweet and Normal Broccoli Spinach/Silverbeet/Bok Cho (and other Asian greens) Snowpeas French Beans Broad Beans Peas Corn
The above ingredients (bar the beans) are usually available all year round so they constitute the major component of the casserole.

Tim
So you put them all in a pot and par boil them, for say 10 minutes?

Just wondering.... would it be a good idea to grate the raw sweet potato? maybe that would make it easier for small parrots and budgies to eat it that way. I eat a lot of it myself, as I'm a coeliac and can't have gluten (can't eat wheat, barley etc.). My birds love fresh, raw vegies.

All my birds enjoy sweet potato slightly cooked and also pumkin when in season.
Love the casserole mix, might give that a try.

I give mine raw or cooked sweetpotato. Skye loves it in her mashed potato.
