Hi guys, Yesterday I noticed a sulpher crested cockatoo sitting on the roof of my garage, he was very dirty and all wet. As I normally do I throw out the Galah's seed that they waste onto the backlawn for other birds to eat it, or the dog lol. So he jumped straight down without hesitation and started eating the seed as if he'd been starving. I sat and watched him for awhile and he jumped back onto the shed roof by first jumping onto a tree stump and flew very poorly onto the roof of the shed. He then jumped onto the fence and walked along that to get to my pergola's roof and had a drink of the rain water from it. So by the looks of things, he a) eigher can't fly as his injured, or b) he is tame and has gotten out. Although at this time he was with another cockatoo. I looked in the free newspaper this week and nothing was in there, but I will definetly be buying the weekend papers and having a look in there. Anyhow, Today I was hanging some washing out and I noticed my little mate was back again standing on the back fence, So I grabbed a small metal food container and put some food in it for him and as soon as he seen the food bowl it was as if his eyes lit up and he jumped down, although hesitantly. I put the food bowl down and stood around 1metre away from it and he started eating. Now ive been out all day and I returned home to look out in the backyard, and his sitting in a large tree at the back of my yard. I'm not sure if i'm doing the right thing by feeding him, but I don't think his wild, although he was with another one yesterday.. What should I do? Just check the local papers, etc etc, or should I try to catch him aswell? Maybe take him to the vet, maybe even put an add in the paper myself? I just know if Banjo or Daisy escaped i'd want someone to do the same.. Who knows I might end up with two Galahs and a Sulpher Crest..

You are doing exactly what every one else on the forum would do Rob, in fact we would be probably trying to catch him. He will keep coming to you as long as you feed him, and I would be offering him more than seed I would be putting some fruit and corn out for him make sure he has fresh water to drink and I am tipping the longer you keep this up the friendlier he will get.

Hey Rob, John is soooo right he knows us well I would be doing the same, feeding it to gain its confidence. If it is that quiet it must be an escapee and will be safer if you can catch it than out with crows and cats etc.

well today, is the 3rd day, and his still out the back, in the same tree. Ive been talking to him holding my arm out, he wants to come closer, but doesnt have the confidence, I put out some fresh water and seed, only problem is I have no where to keep him if I catch him I went looking for a cheap LARGE cage, and couldent find anything. How should I go about catching him? Obviously with a towel or sheet, or something thick.. I think he'll bite a tad harder than the galahs.. lol

He sure will bite hard Rob believe me however if you gain his trust he may not and he may come to you very peacefully and accepting you as a friend, Just the same I would have a very thick pair of leather gloves handy if you try and handle him. Big cages like that are not cheap and I am afraid you may have to shell out some money for one if you are going to keep him, Ebay is a good source of cheap cages and you might pick one up there.
If you are going to attempt to catch him I suggest a towel or something similar to throw over him but if you use that and you fail to get him first go you more than likely will scare him off and never see him again.

hmm, im just worried about him, the poor fella is out the back in a large tree, hopefully that shelters him from the rain and storm, Ill put the food bowl under the pergola, and hopefully he might want to sit there, instead of out in the rain!

Bird nets are very dear from pet shops etc but if you have an amart all sports or similar nearby fish nets are cheap as chips. I got one with a 45cm diameter ring and fairly long handle for 4.95 sure beats 30+ for a proper bird net. Just make sure it has a fair amount of netting so when you scoop the bird they stay in. Good luck!

Rob, Many years ago I had the same thing happen but with a red rump grass parrot. He was forever comming and courting my female in the cage much to the dislike of my male but he would never stop. He was so very close that one day I noticed he had been closed rung, an escapee! The hen was my bait and the laundry was my trap. I put the cage in the laundry, propped the door open with a pot plant and left the nearest door wide open and watched. As if on cue he arrived, flew into the laundry and onto the cage just to talk to his girl. I wandered out and quickly closed the door before he could see me!!! In the end she broke his heart and I bought him a new girl. No one claimed him, he must have been out for a while. Poor man was covered in lice and was thin but he fattened up with extra food! Just an idea for you to ponder. Good luck with this poor baby, I hope he trusts you to come instead

Being dirty looking, could that mean he is a baby?
I came about 30cm away from him today.. And I have a large cocky cage lined up from a bloke from work, so once I get that i'll try to catch him, hopefully he doesn't stress out too much.. i'll let you guys know once I get the cage.
Thank you for all the replies, You are such a helpfull bunch of friendly people. Merry Xmas!

lol, I wont tell em Whilst eating dinner tonight I hear a loud clumbsy landing on the pergola roof, I go outside and my little friend is standing there, I sit down and he pokes his head down and looks at me, So I went and got him some food, and fresh water and put it in the backyard, he ate it all! and had heaps of fresh water. I wish I could have taken a photo of him peeking over at me! As for catching him, I think i'll let him gain my trust and keep moving his food bowl more towards the house, then eventually put some food in the cage and maybe, just maybe he will jump in the cage one day.. .. maybe!
