Today I saw a masked lapwing that, uncharacteristically, was completely apathetic to my presence. I slowly approached it; it took no notice. I reached out to touch it. It took no notice. There were no other birds around. The lapwing allowed me to gently pick it up, completely placid: a bad sign for any bird, let alone one of its kind! I couldn't feel any spurs, so I guess it is a young bird.
I put it in a box and took it home (there are no vets open). It is currently in an open enclosure outiside in the shade (I left it roofless in case it just had sunstroke and recovered. It has been left a dish of water, too.
I don't know what to do about this bird, and I don't have high hopes for it. Now it remains sitting in a slumped position, and slowly closed its eyes, though it's still breathing.
Is there anything else I can do? Anything at all? I think it's dying but I want to help it somehow.

It sounds like the classic signs of being hit by a car, best option is to take it to a vet, who will pass it onto a licenced carer

yep, Ben's right. This bird sounds like it's in severe shock. Warmth, darkness and quiet are the main things needed right now but it doesn't sound too good. If there are no vets open see if you can find a licenced carer who will take it.

Sorry for the late update. Unfortunately the bird died about an hour after I found it. Thankyou for your replies, though. I will keep them in mind for next time (I'm always keeping an eye out for injured birds)
