I know this is probably a long shot, but I'm trying to find a Green Wing King Parrot. My dad had one when we lived in PNG, and anbsolutely adored him. Our Red Wing Parrot is named after him. I want to find a handreared one for him for his 50th. But at the moment I'm finding it hard just to find pictures of one on google! Is there any chance anyone knows someone who breeds either these or our normal King Parrots? Thanks

Think you'll have trouble sourcing a Greenwing King. Not sure if they are available in Australia. When is your Dad's B'Day. Breeding season for the normal Kings is September to January. We would also have to know your location. I believe they are hard to come by as well. www.avianweb.com/greenwingedkingparrot.html

You could Google exotic bird dealers but it would probably be very expensive.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. We're in SE Melbourne, and dad's birthday is in Sept, but I don't want it till his 50th which is next year, altho I might have to settle for whenever I can get it!

I've never seen the Papuan King in Australia - if it does occur it will have been smuggled into the country. I have a list of all exotic birds in Australia that were recognised as being here in 2001, and also the numbers of those that had to be registered with the federal Government under the NEBRS scheme. The Papuan King, Alisterus chloropterus is not on that list and so was not legally present in Australia. The Mollucan King - Alisterus amboinensis - was present but only 3 birds owned by one person in NSW - was legally here. There are quite a lot more of theses - some miraculous breeding from just 3 birds over the last 10 years However if they can be found expect to pay in the thousands. The Australian King makes a great pet - males tend to be more friendly than the females, but some females are also great. To help you source a HR bird we need to know where you live, and expect to pay around $250 to $350 for a HR baby I used to HR them but don't any longer I'm afraid cheers, Mike

Thanks Avinet, what helpful information that is! Well, it looks like I won't be able to get him the exact same breed as our Tim, but I'm sure he'll love a King Parrot. I'm in SE Vic, as I said just above. Could I convince you to handrear a baby for me??
