I am building quite a large habitat aviary to house finches. Could you guys suggest any species?
I live in the south eastern suburbs of melbourne. we can get some frosty mornings and cold SW winds although the shelter of my aviary will cut out any prevailing cold winds.
Any help would be appreciated. I was thinking of gouldians, long tails and hecks long tails to start with.

Cant go past emblemas both yellow and red , hardy laid back little birds , good breeders and pretty tough if bought from local breeders ( acclimatised ) . Make the most unusual noise like a over wound spring pinging open .. Nice to look at and get along with most other non aggressive finches. Also known as firetails. Dont really need live food to breed so easy peasy to look after.

A communial finch aviary is a wonderful sight. All them different songs and colours. I would stay away from Weaver birds and Whydahs. All Australian Finches will be compatable. I have Chestnut Breasted Manakins, Gouldian Finches, Zebra Finches, Hecks grassfinches, Parsons Finches, Spicebirds, Diamond Doves, Chinese painted Quails, Java Sparrows, African & Indian Silverbills as well as Gloster Canaries and Fife canaries all in the same flight. It's very enjoyable to watch them all during the summer months.
