I was wondering what experience or opinions you guys had on 'Happy Huts'. These are furry-type shelters that are hung in the aviary and apparently the birds shelter in them. Being located in the Snowy Mountains, I thought these might be good for the birds on those really frosty nights. But I've also heard some negative reports as well - such as birds getting caught in loose threads. Just wondered what the general consensus was.

Conures, Lorikeets and Lovebirds will usually use them but budgies and cockatiels rarely will. Quakers sometimes will.
There are reported problems with them being chewed, fraying and birds getting caught up. I've never had this problem but know some who have. If you do use one, be sure to check it regularly for stray threads and trim as needed. Also be sure to get one that is easy to wash - some use cardboard as a stiffener in the fabric for the bottom and washing is a potential disaster.
cheers,
Mike

Make your own! That's what I do and for the bottom, I use some stiff plastic they use for quilting templates, which I remove when washing. I custom make them to suit all my birds...and my lizards love them too....lol. Not hard to do, hey, if I can make them, anyone can!

Hi Spook, I agree with all responses above... there is no substitute for vigilant supervision... you never know what our beloved parrots are going to d with the toys/homes we give them. I use the happy huts for my indoor birds and babies, when hand raising babies to be sold as pets. I have had a lot of success with the happy huts with ALL my conures, caiques AND Eclectus - lol the Eclectus dont so muc slee in them of a night, raher they use them as a tunnel to play in and through. The Caiques tend to chew the eyelets for the parrot clips to feed through until they succeed at pulling them apart - and some of the sun conures chew on the elastic that holds the clips to the hut until they chew right through - hence a little sewing to put it back together again. Whilst there are a lot of polar fleece type happy huts in lovely colours and patterns, I think the ones less likely to cause and concern would be the cotton ones... allpethomes on ebay have them... In saying that, I do have the polar fleece type as well (from Dicky Bird Toys & Letstalkbirds - on ebay) and haven't had any problems I have a 12mth old sun conure in a mini fleece happy hut and he adores it - treats it like his mate and snuggles up to it My current baby sun conures actually lay in it on their backs and on their sides with their cheek turned to one side- ever soo cute!! Not sur ethis has helped any - I guess trial and error is a great teacher... but, be sure to keep an eye on them, they seem tobe ableto get into mischief with anything if in the mind to.. My green cheek loves his to bits and doesnt chew it at all whereas he destroys all his other toys. But I find he does the same as a sun conure above, at night he goes to sleep in it and sometimes lies on his back and loves snuggling in. Good investment I think for when it does get cooler.
