Hi folks: Yep still excited about the recent release of my film Discovering the World of Parrots. Above is the Red-collared Variety I filmed at Edith Falls in the NT Here is another youtube clip featuring Rainbow Lorikeets. Not for the faint of heart because I do feature the biology of the species including aggressive interactions (and I mean aggressive) Naturally I take that in stride personally and simply am thrilled with this stunningly colored beauty!

If you watch the youtube clip you will see that at 2 min 40 sec mark at least 2 pairs of Rainbow Lorikeets engage in battle for mates and nesting hollows (the hollows were directly over them for the most part).
I was surprised to see so much down and feathers strewn around at the battle site. Rainbows sure mean business at breeding time! Since I was only in Aus for 6 months filming has anyone else observed that severe an aggressive match in this species? I am simply curious.
thanks
Don

It is not unusual Don. Around me there are a lot of Rainbows and not that many breeding hollows - in suburbia the big old trees with hollows are the ones cut down during clearing for house building, or because of a perceived danger from falling branches.
The resulting squabbles over ownership of hollows can get quite intense, although the one you filmed is at the top end of the aggression scale. They don't usually get down and serious on the ground, more usually on the branches near the hollow.
cheers,
Mike
