AJ hasn't been himself for a few days, and on Friday night he started wheezing. I know that's not at all good, so off to the vet we went today (it was the soonest I could get in) I am taking him in again tomorrow so they can do a crop wash, and get to the bottom of what is going on. There were no obvious signs of anything - nothing at the back of his mouth, on his tongue etc. The vet thought he was a bit on the skinny side, but AJ wouldn't let us weigh him there, so I weighed him here at home. He's sitting at 397g! His weight was around 370g when I first got him! So that just doesn't make sense to me. AJ's not eating, which I am worried about. Not even tempted with corn on the cob or sunflower seeds. The vet on duty wasn't the one who worked with avian vets, but he will be there tomorrow. Like I say, with the crop wash and gram stains, we should find out what's going on. The vet gave me the option to put AJ on antibiotics and hope for the best, but not a good course of action with a bird! I got the feeling he is often asked by people to do that, which makes me sad. Not everything that makes a bird sick is bacterial. Anyhow, that's where we stand at the moment. I should know more tomorrow around lunch time. Oh, and a friendly reminder to everyone - know your bird! If you notice a change in behaviour, take them to a vet! Carley and AJ

Goodluck Carley and AJ, please keep us posted on his progress and the outcome of the Vet visit today..... Just as well AJ has you as his slave and you noticed him unwell. So many people ignore these kinds of things....it's not fair on any animal! Anyway,I digress as always...lol....Goodluck again Carley, all our thoughts are with you. Take care Ann-Maree xx

Carley, good luck at the next vet visit. Hopefully the AV will be able to better help.
I'm sorry I can't offer advice, as so far I've been blessed with never having had a sick bird & I dread when it may happen.
But I can sympathise with you. It's so hard when any of our pets get sick. They are part of our family, after all.
Keep us posted.

Carley my first course of action with a sick bird would be to give Probotics & Spark. Given together will sometimes be enough to give the bird the edge on a illness & help them recover without the help of antibiotics. Sometimes a bird will have an off day for unknown reasons & be OK in no time. If the bird hasn't improved in 12 to 24 hours or has gotten worse over a short period of time it's best to go along with the Vets advice.

I refused to put AJ on antibiotics 'just in case' - the vet is doing tests today to see what is going on.
Good news is that AJ was much more talkative this morning! A little girl who was at the vet with her parents thought it was wonderful when AJ said hello! lol
So I don't know - maybe something upset him to make him off. I should have some answers today. If nothing else, it will be a good checkup for my baby.

AJ is much more like himself this morning. The vet hasn't finished all of the tests, but so far there is nothing conclusive. He will call me when he finishes tests - he got all of the samples he needs yesterday, so it's all good so far. YAY!
The last time AJ wasn't himself was when he got away and spent the night in the wild - he DID have a slight infection then. I didn't think of it then until Robyn pointed it out - was so glad to have AJ home I guess.
Now I'm turning into an over-protective mum! LOL
Thanks all for the well wishes!
Carley

That's good news. Glad things seem on the up and up for AJ now.
Glad to hear too that he returned to you, after his adventures in the wild.
