Hi , does anyone make their own seed mix for small parrots based on Budgie mix ?
Having a big problem getting seed that isnt saturated with way too much sunflower seed.
What extra seeds will I need to add and at what ratio ?
Thanks folks oh I have a few different parrots from neophema up to Princess but mostly Red Rumps and Quarrion .

I don't normally mix my own but have at times when supplies were interrupted. A good budgie mix would have around 5% by weight of grey striped sunflower added, and maybe half that amount of safflower.
A potential problem with budgie mixes is that some have too much hulled oats added - a high fat seed which is good in small amounts - no more than 5%. Also the budgie mix should contain a good proportion of canary seed, one of the more nutritious seeds used in mixes but also one of the more expensive.
If you mix your own it can be a good idea to double the amount of sunflower when the birds are breeding - the extra fat and protein can help baby growth.
cheers,
Mike
