Introducing "Leo" I picked him up yesterday at the RSPCA. Now fairly simple question for thos who may know Kaks. Boy or Girl? Juvenile or Adult? Based on what I've researched over the past 24 hours I'm going with BOY... flatter head & wider beak at the cere... bars under the wings are very pale... he is also seems rather small compared to pics I've seen and eyes seem to be more brown/red rather than red.... so possibly juvenile.. Of course I could be totally wrong... hehehehe... I've never examined a kak to be able to make any real comparisons... What ya think guys?? (Geez I hope the pic attaches okay)... Attachments:

I have a pair but can't tell which is which. Testing is probably the only way to tell. I think the breeder that I got them from said the cinnamon was a girl, but she is bigger than the male? I guess I'll wait until one of them lays an egg. Lol.

Yes I think a boy but they are one of those birds that are easier to sex in the hand than in a photo. A front on photo might help. Age is difficult - Kakarikis don't have a long lifespan, rarely getting over 10 years. Your bird is a bit rough looking in the feather but since "he" is a RSPCA bird there might be a bit of history behind him. Looking at his feet he doesn't look that old - 2-3 years max.
Laraine - in general the males are bigger than the females, in fact just about always if they are the same subspecies of Kakarikis. Howver Red-fronted are bigger than Yellow-fronted, so a Red-front female could be biggger than a Yellow-fronted male.
However some breeding combinations will only produce cinnamon females and normal males so it is possible your breeders might have bred from one of these combinations - a normal female and a cinnamon or split cinnamon male.
cheers,
Mike

Well, now that he's settled & he's happy to jump all over me (man these guys just can't sit still... hehehe)... I've been able to look at him more closely... he's got a wide flat "roman" nose... flat head at the front... bulky body... pale under wing stripe... Yep... It's a BOY... Larraine look for those things in your pair and you should get an idea of which is boy or girl... most telling is the wide "roman nose" for boys & a thinner sleeker beak for girls... also the stripe under the wing is more prominent in the girls & more faded in the boys... Good Luck...!!! Oh and yeah he is regrowing quite a few feathers & is quite "ratty" from his RSPCA experience & whatever happened before he got there... but he's getting better... he's also definately a hybrid... if I lift the feathers on his head its white under there??
