Hi I'm wondering if anybody knows anything about Crimson wing mutations? I have a two year old crimson wing pair that are just starting to fully colour up and the male is getting yellow feathers around his face and head. Not sure if this is normal or not, every photo I've been able to find shows a normal crimson wing with a bright green head but no yellow. The hen has the normal faint yellow edging that gives the slight scalloped effect on her back but the male has never shown any yellow markings before I took a good look today Just wondering if this could just be a normal colouration or something else? I can't find any information on pied crimson wing parrots only kings so I don't know what to think Is probably nothing but better to know!

A photo would be good to see just what is happening. There have been some reports of an aquired pied - where some yellow feathers appear increasingly with successive moults, usually starting a 2 years. It doesn't appear to be genetic but likely a metabolic effect, possible connected to a liver problem.
Yellow feathers appearing can also be an indicator of a disease problem affecting the liver - such as Psittacosis or Beak & Feather Disease. It may be worth getting a blood test done through an avian vet to screen for these two diseases.
cheers,
Mike
