We have rescued a young bird who appears to have broken tail feathers as they seem to be all floppy so to speak. The birds wings seem fine and the bird is eating( breadcrumbs mixed with egg and some steamed fruit in separate bowls) and quite alert but cannot fly properly and will no doubt die if not cared for. Please can you give us some advice. What to feed and whether it can survive with care. Also does not seem to be too distressed when handled. We are not bird people but will do our best for this little guy.

What Avinet said in the other thread pretty much covers it. I'd keep it in a warm quiet place til you contact a carer. I don't like the way it isn't appearing to stress when handled. That's usually not a good sign with wildlife. If it stays in your care and is able to be released you must release it in the same place you found it as these birds have territories.

Hi guys thanks for the all the advice but unfortunately while we were trying to find a local animal carer the little guy passed away late last night. Pretty upsetting for us. We are show dog people and that was a bit tough.

Sorry to hear that - one can only try with these wild birds that come into care.
cheers,
Mike

I'm sorry to hear that. I had a feeling it wasn't going to survive by the fact that it was so handleable. Good on you for trying though. Injured wild birds have a very high mortality rate.
Out of curiosity, what dogs do you show?
