I could hardly believe my eyes this morning. I went out side to see what Bell our dog was barking at, she was looking up towards the sky. I heard this distinctive cry & looked up to see a flock of Red Tail Blacks flying over our house. What a sight there was about 30 of them. I had read in the paper a few weeks ago they were at the beaches feeding off the beach almond trees but hadn't actually seen any. They were a sight to behold.
That is the first time in my life i have seen RTB'S on the coast. I have seen them at Mareeba, they started to come in from west when the Mareeba Wetlands had been established.
Bloody well made my day. ;D

What an awesome sight that would have been.....I love their call....it always makes me tingle all over.....We had lots of them flying around when we lived at Bargo....mostly yellow and white tails from memory........good for you....! Oh, does that mean 30 days of rain? lol....I was always told that they were a sign of how many days of rain we could expect.....

we used to have a small family of around 7 fly around our house in Calliope. Out here I have seen only a couple of RT's but sometimes when we go to the beach I have heard them in the "sheoak"?? trees (not sure if that is the actual name of the trees). Oh and i LOVE the pic of the male gang gang.....lovely

Wow I wasn't even sure you had RTs over east. They are very common in WA, especially around my area as we live next to the major park in Perth.

I am not an expert by any means.........just been doing a bit of reading in my ABK a guide to black cockatoos and black cockatoos are all over Australia. The red tails too are all over Australia depending on what "subspecies"........well depending on what area will depend on what subspecies. Over here on the eastern coast we seem to have a lot of "magnificus or banksii banksii" where as over in your area it possibly is the samueli or maybe even the naso.......depending on what part of the lower part of WA you are in. The ABK books are very very good and informative.

oh and I didn't realise that gang gangs are part of the "black cockatoo family" until I read that book either.
