I was over getting seed yesterday and the guy that owns the shop told me to go int his seed room and have a look at the breeding cage he had in there, in the cage was a scally breasted lori and it seemed that was all until he came in and put his hand into the breeding box, out came the most beautiful Lutino musk Lorikeet I have seen, I have already put in my order for a baby ;D, he reckons they are as rare as hens teeth and wouldn't tell me where he got it, all he did was smile when i asked him where he got it, the scally he had was a hybrid and was a nice looking bird too he said there wasn't a lot around at the moment, does anyone know of any for sale.

Lutino Musks are not that uncommon - there is usually a few on Petlink, and a Google for lutino Musks will turn up quite a few, such as at www.bbaviaries.com.au/index.html or at sydney.gumtree.com.au/c-Pets-birds-MALE-LUTINO-MUSK-W0QQAdIdZ263448753In the Rainbow/Scaly/Musk group the lutino mutation has come out of Scaly's. They have then been crossed with Rainbows and Musks to get lutinos of those species, through hybridization. I went to a talk by one of the early breeders of these birds back in around 2001. Was the lutino a hen John? Or a baby? cheers, Mike

Hi Mike, it was a hen and already exploring the nest box, it certainly was a stunning bird, so with that combination he had there he would possibly get more Lutino babies is that right, I hope so, as have put in my order ;D

Hi Mike, it was a hen and already exploring the nest box, it certainly was a stunning bird, so with that combination he had there he would possibly get more Lutino babies is that right, I hope so, as have put in my order ;D John That depends on the male being split to lutino, since it is a sex-linked mutation and the female can't pass it on to her babies unless the male is carrying the gene. Also if the "Scaly" looks basically like a Scaly and doesn't have any obvious Musk in it then even if it is split to lutino the babies could turn out to look more like lutino Scaly's than Musks. There can be some real pitfalls breeding mutation colours by hybridising if it isn't done properly. cheers, Mike
