Hi all, I am new here and I have a couple of questions about my Galah's behaviour that I am hoping someone will be able to help me out with.
I have two Galahs, the eldest Noddy is a male and approximately 2 and 1/2 years old and was rescued from the wild after he fell out of the nest. He is a very tame but cheeky little bugger who shows a genuine love for my fiance and (most of the time) enjoys spending time with me as well!
Recently with both of us working during the day we felt like it would be a good idea to get Noddy a friend to talk to and play with, so about 6 weeks ago we picked up an 8 week old Galah from a local aviary, who we named Frankie. We are hopeful (but unsure) that Frankie is a female, her eyes are a greyish colour so its a bit hard to tell!
Anyway, we have been careful not to throw them both into the deep end, so we have them in separate cages which we have slowly moved closer together in the aim of getting them used to each other. Frankie is very skittish and is only really responding to my actions and is frightened of my partner, and is still a bit anxious about getting onto my hand on occasion. However we have tried to slowly introduce Noddy and Frankie outside of the cages and have noticed some behaviours and I wanted to clarify whether or not they are threatening or dangerous to either bird or just them playing with each other.
Noddy appears to be a bit frightened of Frankie whilst Frankie seems to be intrigued by him and watches everything he does. However when they get close they will both try and bite each others beaks - I don't know how better to describe it other than they appear to be kissing! - and Frankie will make horrible screeching noises. Noddy doesn't put his crest up, although sometimes he will extend his wings. Just as an aside, Noddy's behaviour hasn't changed towards either myself or my partner, however my partner is finding it hard to become attached to Frankie which is probably why Noddy is still happy with her.
Can anybody give me any insight into this behaviour and if there are any suggestions for getting these two better acquainted they would be greatly appreciated!
