I got my first pair on friday ... Very happy , active and vocal little birds . I am in doubt though about if I should put them into their aviary or not . They came from Cessnock and Im in Dubbo . We have been having big frosts and although the days have been warmish the nights are cold . Im not losing birds , I even have fledgeling Bourkes out and about but because I dont know the climate in Cessnock Im not sure what to do . The breeding season starts Augsut and I would have liked to have them settled before then . Yes they are well over 12 months and ready to breed . Any suggestions ? Thanks.

Purple-crowns are indeed lovely little birds, and I always enjoyed having any in the shop. They also make nice hand raised pets as well as good quiet aviary birds.
Temperature shouldn't be a big problem as long as your aviary is sheltered from cold winds and is dry. For May and June this year the coldest overnight temp at Cessnock Airport was -3.2°C while the coldest at Dubbo Airport was also -3.2°C, the same! There is a tendency for Dubbo to be slightly colder, but not enough to make any difference to the birds.
Their natural range includes much of Victoria, and it can get pretty cold around inland Victoria.
Hope they breed for you - plenty of nectar bearing flowers are a big help I found - good natural food.
cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike , I cant believe how much they have grown on me already . Im sure there will be another pair joining the flock before too long .
I think your right about them being a great companion bird , maybe after they have a clutch or 2 I might have a go ...heres hoping they breed for me to.
