Hey everyone! I hope I am doing this right as I have never participated or made a thread before. Hopefully the pic attaches properly! In the pic you can see a yellow lump- I have never owned a cockatoo of any kind before and am wondering- is this his oil gland? Any and all information would be great! Attachments:

Hi and Welcome to the Forum. I am NO expert but if that lump was on one of my birds, I would take him to the Vet straight away. It's always best to get an expert opinion when in doubt......Let us know what happens with your bird and good luck! Someone else on here with more experience will no doubt comment on here very soon and give you some more advice. There are some amazing people on here, so enjoy the Forum!! Flossy

Hi and welcome to the Forum
I'm not sure exactly what we are supposed to be able to see - do you mean the bare patch just below the red feathers? From what I can see it looks like a perfectly normal preen gland - which produces the oil they rub over their feathers to waterproof them. in a galah it feels like a small pimple if you put your finger tip on it.
Occasionally the preen gland can get blocked and infected, and very very rarely it can develop a tumour. If either of those happen the bird will usually start picking at it and end up pulling feathers out.
I don't think there is a problem but as always, if in doubt be sure to see an avian vet - let us know where you live and we can probably recommend one in your area.
Hope to hear lots more about Charlie - there are several galah owners here and we all love to read about and see photos of them.
cheers,
Mike

Thanks so much everyone! Charlie doesn't seem bothered by it at all and I have organized to take him to the vet so when I get Jim checked I will let everyone know the verdict.

Ok so it turns out that it's nothing bad- because I couldn't touch the area I couldn't determine what I was looking at. I took my boy to the vet and managed to get a proper look, it was just a feather over the oil gland. It's been stripped of colour and just looked bad. So Charlie is all good!! Thanks for all your help guys
