I bought some Lino from Bunnings and I plan lining the trays of the double macaw cage with it. When I unrolled it, there was a "new Lino" smell to it. I've had it outside all morning to air and the small is almost gone. Do I need to wait until smell is completely gone before using it?
Thanks for any advice

I would certainly not use it until all smell has gone - otherwise as long as they can't reach it to chew there should be no problem with it
cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike.
Tinga never, ever uses his cage floor, so no risk of chewing. He only uses the upper two thirds of his double macaw cage. Below that is completely wasted space for him.

I have been using breeder's choice cat litter in the trays lately. It works a treat & so far i haven had a problem with the birds eating it. Cuts down on the work load as well, doesn't need changing & where the most mess is it all just clumps & can be easily picked up with a small shovel & thrown into the garden.
Worth a try especially with lories.

oooh, i hadn't thought about cat litter before! I get old newspapers for free from my workmates so it will cost more to go the litter route but it might be easier to clean!

Hi Robyn
I did go the litter route earlier, but because my cage trays are so large, it was quite expensive. But maybe I was changing it too frequently. I see you mention not changing it, just scouping out the clumps, which I assume you just top up with fresh litter to replace. Does there come a time when you would change it out totally and how long would you estimate that to be, a) for lorikeets and b) for Sun Conure.
ATM, I am using the lino for the sun conure. Because the cage tray is largish, I was using 4 sections of newspaper, each overlapping. Each section was several layers deep. I found this annoying, because when you slide the papers out for changing, no matter how careful I was, they come apart and the mess always fell into the tray below.
I keep a vacuum cleaner in the birdroom (it's only for the birds) & daily, I would use a paint scraper to scrape the droppings loose from the bottom of Tinga's play stand and vacuum it up. It dawned on me I can do the same with the cage tray, if I line it with lino. It is working a treat so far.

Robyn if your happy with the lino & it's working well why change. Sounds like a great idea. Anything that makes life a bit easier. I was actually considering a piece of lino for the stand cause Cocky always craps over the edge on the floor which i have covered in newspaper.
Yep i do just take the wet patches out & top up. Change the whole lot about every week. I mainly just use it for the SC Too. The rest get the paper & i must admit when i read your post i had to giggle because i do the same with the paper & end up spilling it on the floor. I was just wondering if you curse the way I do. PMSLOL.

Changing the litter weekly on the 2 large trays in a double macaw cage works out a bit costly, so I will stick with the Lino.
And you're right, I use to curse and grumble under my breath when the papers split apart & muck fell in the carpet & back un the tray. The Lino is making daily cage cleaning a breeze, particularly with the cage grate removed.
