What are the best nuts in shells to feed cockatoos? I want to get her really hard ones for her to work out how to crack and work her beak a bit? Suggestions on what and where to buy?

I know macadamias in their shell are next to impossible to open. Walnuts?

Yeah nuts in their shells only ever seem popular/available at Xmas time. Some of the specialised grocery stores sell nuts in their shell. Even almonds would be good but again, hard to find unless some one has a tree.

I've bought walnuts in their shells from the supermarket before.
Make sure you DON'T give peanuts!

Can I ask what's wrong with peanuts? I believe some of them have a fungus in them from being under ground or something? But surely organic ones are ok? Interested to know....thanks

Flossy even organic peanuts are grown underground. Sometimes when you pick up a bag of peanuts the shell has like a green or powdery look to it. They are old & harbour the fungi. I steer clear of peanuts & buy my parrots almonds.
Getting back to Elyse, I don't give my SC Too any hard nuts. I don't think their beaks are designed to crack open really hard nuts. Although i could be wrong. Almonds in shell would be OK. I have given my Too other nuts but have cracked them open for him, otherwise they just sit on the floor of the cage.
What you can find for your girl is Pine Cones, Gum Nuts, Beach Almonds just to name a few.

I steer clear of peanuts & buy my parrots almonds. Same from me as Robyn has said - I avoid peanuts in the shell and stick to almonds. I find my Alex's and Greys have no problem breaking into the almond shells, my Ringnecks can break them open but have a struggle (mainly their feet struggle to hold them) and the cockatiels, and Princesses ignore them. My Plumheads would love to get into them but their feet are too small to hold them unless I get an occasional dwarf almond! However they are a high fat food so they are strictly rationed and a special treat, not a daily addition. I don't think walnuts would be an issue to give to a Sulphur - whether they could get into them is a different matter, I've never tried them, so I might get some to see how the Alex's go - they can usually destroy anything You might have to crack the first few initially so that Ruby gets the idea about yummy food is inside them. Pine cones are the ideal chew material though for a SC2 - find some trees and collect a bag full cheers, Mike

Ok cool. I always wondered about he peanuts......although I have to admit - I have been guilty of giving them to my birds on the odd occassion. I have always broken the casing open though and only given them the nut.....but no more!! I will get some almonds instead. Thanks guys.....I love learning on this site.....there is always something interesting to read. Take care everyone

I can buy a large selection of nuts in their shells from Dandenong Market in Victoria - pecans, almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts etc. Where are you located? The PRC in Qld was stocking quite a lot of nuts in shells as well but a lot were unavailable after the floods. The sell almonds with extra hard shells that my eckies have no hope of getting into and i gave a bag to a friend with a RTB too recently - they were a big hit! Karen

Peanuts are fine shelled though? I feed Jingo these all natural, unsalted peanuts without the shell. She loves them. But are they ok for her?

Shelled peanuts are OK but high in fat so give as an occasional treat not a regular part of their diet
cheers,
Mike
