Hi all, we have an aviary with 2 pairs of Scarlet chested parrots in. One is normal colors and the other pair are a blue mutation. The male of this pair has only been here about 4 months. There has always been some argy-bargy going on but nothing serious until last weekend. On the Saturday we had taken all the babies out (there were 7) that the normal pair had hatched. They were about 3-4 months old. On the Sunday all hell broke loose! I went out to find the normal female bleeding from near her eye and the blue female angrly defending all the 3 nesting boxes. It look like the pairs have switched partners as well. After rushing the female to friends with more experience than me for treatment she is totally ok - whew! We have separated the two pairs into their original matches but now they keep calling to each other. We aren't sure what to do from here. No matter what aviary arrangement we make they will be able to see and hear each other. Will the blue male look after the blue female if she lays, even if they are not his? We are not sure if this is possible but she is so interested in the nesting boxes it seems likely......... Help!! Karen

Hi Karen
Glad to see you posting here. Sorry I know nothing of breeding nor of any answers to your question. I hope things have settled back down.

Hi Karen, You have now learned that despite what some may say, scarlets should be housed 1 pair to an aviary. They are not suitable to be housed in a colony situation. Now that the 2 pairs are separate things will settle back down again. Neophamas have a very loose pair bond, this is why they swapped mates when housed together, in fact one cock will mate and pair up with more than 1 hen if given the chance. You will find that this will also work in your favour now that they are divided up. The cocks should both do their jobs with the hens they are housed with. If the blue pair dont bond it is not that likely she will lay eggs anyway. Once she comes intro breeding condition and is interested in finding a mate, I am sure she will accept whichever cock is in with her.
Good luck.
Greg
