My lorikeet has injured his toes last night in a toy. He got caught in string and bled alot. We took him to the after hours vet and have him on anti-biotics and pain killers. His leg has bandaged. I was just wondering what the best way to care for him and when does the bandage come off? as he is always getting it wet in his food.

The chances are he will chew it off after a couple of days - depending on how well the bandage was put on and what was used to do it. As long as it isn't bothering him when it comes off and he doesn't start chewing the foot then it shouldn't need re bandaging. Continuing with the painkillers for 5 to 6 days should ensure he doesn't chew it - chewing is a pain response. If he is getting it wet in his wet mix I would suggest only giving him dry mix for a few days - or if he is a Rainbow that can't live without his wet mix find a dish that will stop him standing in it Apart from giving him his medication there is not much else you can do - let nature take it's course from now on - the vet visit was a good move to make sure there was no major damage and get it cleaned up OK. cheers, Mike

Thank you very much for your posting. I thought they chewed the banadage for fun .lol. He's doing alright, been a bit turned off food but hopefully that wears off. Giving him antibiotics isn't fun but hopefuly it pays off Thanks again
