Showing me his beautiful red pins coming through under his wings. Being adventurous after a feed, he jumped off the table not long after I took this. (he was ok, it's only a small/low coffee table) Cutie ;D

My Clever Baby. He flew for the first time about ten minutes ago.. I had to tell you all.. immediately.. LOL.. He was on the coffee table after a feed and I'd turned and moved about a metre away to put how much he'd eaten into the records, I keep on my laptop. when he flew off and landed on my shoulder. I was surprised at how gentle he landed. I was expecting a crash landing for a first time flying. Aw I am so proud... Hehe

Jax has been flying about alot but he tends to go up to the ceiling and fly into the walls with a crash, and fall to the floor. So I had to clip his wings today, I feel so guilty But it is for his safety I was worried one of these crashes may end in a broken neck or something. The breeder that I got Jax off gave me a sheet that said to clip feathers P10 -P6 which I have done and that if the bird is a strong flier P5 and P4 can also be clipped. The "A Guide to eclectus parrots" book says to clip P10 - P5. He can still glide at the level he takes off maybe even raising a foot higher with P10-P6 clipped, he's only tried once since I clipped him, he is getting round his cage by flying and jumping from perch to side of cage still. Should I keep him as is or do P5 too? How do other Ecky owners clip their babies wings?

I love them at this age when they are all a bundle of mess, sort of like a foal before it gets it's legs under it. Very cute!

I don't ever clip until the baby eckie has a chance to fly & it doesn't take to long for them to master it either. When & if the new owners want their baby clipped only then do i do it. To start with only a light clip of the flight feathers. Enough for the bird to glide safely to the floor & landing on their feet. My Red Tail Black that has only been flying for the last week or so is mastering it very well. He has a hugh wingspan, he has had a few crashes but all in all he is doing great. I am getting him a harness so he can come outside with me. A parrot can never break it's neck even if it flies into a window what does kill them is the damage caused to the brain if they hit hard enough. The only way the neck can be severed is to pull head & body in opposite directions.

Thanks Robyn. Thats good that they can't break their neck by flying into things.

hows jax going these days? i couldn't help but have a little chuckle at myself. when kinsei was starting to fly i panicked at everything - 'OMG he's just crashed onto the floor!' and 'oh poor baby stacked it' (...... goes running to "save" him LOL) then the kids have a fall and it's - 'they'll be fine'. as robyn said they master it very quickly! do you have any new photos to share?

Haha, Kinsei. So true. He's going good. He loves flying. If he's on his cage and he see's me he flies right to me. I did clip his wings, I have 3 kids and I have previously lost a pink and grey due to a child opening the front door whilst birdie was out. Even though I clipped his wings he can still fly down off cage etc. Just can't fly upto the ceiling or lights which terrified me when he could. LOL I'll have to get round to adding some more photo's.

OMG.........I forgot how cute they are when babies. As for clipping.........I am with Robyn. I used to be a "clipper" but do not clip anymore until they are fully weaned and by then they are usually flying around quite competently and then I only clip if the new "paront" wants me to specifically clip them........but I know they have learned to fly properly and I will add.........my babies are taught to fly to me while I handraise them so they learn to fly safely before they start to learn to fly to other things like boings and playstands and cages that are in my house. Erik (my boy in my signature) was bred and handraised by me.........he is blind in one eye (damaged while he was in the nestbox while he was a tiny baby) and because of this and the fact we were going away and had to take him with us and I was not sure if I would be able to fed him indoors or outside at times.........so I did clip him but when his feathers grew back he learned to fly properly and now at the age of 3 years he is a very competent flier (occassionally though he does clip walls and doorways due to his blind side).
