I made a brooder/hospital cage with a false bottom and a light bulb under the false bottom - and varied the wattage of the bulb depending on the temperature I wanted and the temperature of the room. Generally it was either a 25 or 40 watt bulb - the old type not the modern compact fluoro ones. I have also used a heat pad - the type used in reptile enclosures.
Whichever you use it is highly desirable, if not essential, to also use a thermostat to control the temperature. Without the temperature control that provides you can easily overheat the babies. Suitable thermostats are used for reptiles, such as those you will see if you search on Ebay for "thermostat reptile" - around $30-$40 and at that sort of price consider it essential.
cheers,
Mike

great thanks for reply, i have a thermostat already hooked up with a fan and duct to extract hot air from top of box and return it to the bottom hoping this will help circulate and give an even temp throughout the box, i guess i could just try infa red or ceramic and see how testing goes

My brooder box has a light with a dimmer switch. I use a 100W bulb. & just adjust the dimmer to get the desired heat. Works like a charm. Will find a pic My home made brooder is rather large though.
