I've noticed that each breeding season my albino hen has always tried to take over another 's nest, or so i thought. As i was in the aviary this evening i noticed her come out of a nest box, she was covered in egg!! I inspected the nest and she had destroyed both eggs. My question is... Is there anyway of stopping her from eating the eggs? I have removed her from the aviary into a spare cage at the moment but would like to avoid keeping her in there. Thanks. P.S my lutino hen died unexpectedly and of course she happened to be the one paired up with the red rump!! He didn't seem to mind thought, he is now singing and dancing to my grey hen.

This sort of behaviour is always a possible problem when housing multiple hens together during breeding season - which is all year round with budgies. Really th eonly solution when you have an egg destroye ris to separate her - put he in a breeding cabinet with her mate - let he concentrate on her own eggs and not other hen's eggs.
Sometimes a hen will eat her own eggs, and if she does that then substituting fake eggs as she lays may be the answer - when she finds she can't eat them it can break the habit.
cheers,
Mike

I had the same problem last summer with one of my young budgie hens. I lost heaps of prospective babies (can't estimate how many). My only solution was to separate her completely from all breeding birds, she is now living in a cage inside until the breeding season finishes.

I aquired a hen budgie, she was killing other hens babies because she wanted that nest. I ended up with her & a male, her first nest was infertile but the next was successful with 4 little chicks. So once housed on her own she was fine.

I think I need fake eggs for my Plumhead, where can I buy them Mike? Fake budgie eggs should be available from larger bird orientated pet shops, though they are a little small though to fool a Plumhead. I don't recall any fake eggs being around that are plumhead/cockatiel size. Maybe have a search with Google? cheers, Mike

Shame about the postage though. I have the same problem with the rats' products, amazingly cheap to buy in the US but the shipping makes it cost prohibitive.
