A friend was asking me yesterday if I knew what to do, as he has 1 pair of budgies which have hatched 2 chicks then the next day the babies are dead and appear to have been eaten. They are the only birds he has so can't blame anyone else.
I've had the experiene of a hen killing another hen's babies but not their own.

Good question Laraine, some destroy their nests for a number of reasons. Some don't like nest inspections, some sort of predator hanging around. Inexperienced parents.
Has he checked to make sure mice or rats can't get into the cage.
Also sometimes the chicks hatch weak & can't stand up to be fed & die. Or it's also possible the chicks were sick with something maybe passed on by the parents.

I had a similar experience with some of my canaries, many moons ago. I knew the parents had hatched 2 young and then one dies after a few weeks so was quite old. I watched them as both parents feed one I could see and then kept going back (both parents) and trying to "dig" into the nest. So went in and had a look and one was obviously dead and they were trying to eat it to prevent it harming the other living chick. Probably knew (or couldn't perhaps) if they turf the dead one out the live one may go with it.
