Would anyone happen to have a recipie for those egg biscuits that the pet stores sometimes sell for birds? I don't know if they are available in Australia, but they have them in the States. They are expensive to buy and I would like to start making my own. They are supposed to be good for boosting the protein intake of their diet.

We have egg and biscuit mix - sold as a powder that is either mixed with water to a porridge type of consistency or given as the dry powder to birds. Is that what you mean or do you have a proper dry biscuit made from egg and biscuits? Generally boosting protein is only needed with breeding birds, or possibly moulting birds. If a cockatiel is getting a small amount of oil seeds such as sunflower, linseed or safflower then it will receive sufficient protein for it's daily needs. And if it gets pellets then it will receive plenty of the essential proteins. However giving different foods is always good environmental enrichment for the bird. Even giving the same foods a different way is good - sometimes giving a seed bell instead of seed in a feeder for instance.stimulation cheers, Mike

I am talking about a biscuit made from eggs. It is yellow, hard and crunchy and resembles a miniature loaf of bread and come in a pack of 4. Also, I don't know if this is what you see at the pet stores in Australia, but over here it is a little hard to get as the company that usually makes it has changed it's products and doesn't sell these anymore- -though I've seen it in another brand.

I've never seen egg biscuits as you describe here, but a quick Google turned up a couple of recipes that may be worth trying Bogie's Birdie Biscotti - from www.birdsnways.com/birds/rcakes.htm Posted by: Catherine Dobbins April 19, 1997 Mix 1 cup ground bird pellets, 1/2 cup corn meal, 1/2 cup whole wheat flour, 1 cup ground almonds. Add 1-2 tbs powdered wheat grass and 2 tbs powdered eggshells. Mix in 4 whole eggs, 1 jar of babyfood carrots, and enough unsweetened fruit juice to mix into a firm dough. Scoop by the spoonful and roll into balls of about 0.5-0.75 " diameter; place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake in oven at 325 degrees for 20-30 min. Cool on a rack and keep in the refrigerator. Also freezes well. Depending on size, makes about 90-100. I keep a ziplock of these in the freezer at all times and take out about 15-20 at a time and keep in the refrigerator. My U2 and CAG both LOVE these and will do just about anything to get one! I think they are a much healthier substitute for many of the bird treats in the pet stores. and from avianadvisor.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=birdfood&action=display&thread=255Polly Biscuits 1 C - uncooked oatmeal 3/4 C - powdered milk 1/3 C - butter 1/2 C - cornmeal 1 tsp - vegetable bouillon 1 egg, beaten, with shell (washed) 1 1/2 C - hot water 3 1/2 C - multigrain flour Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a large bowl, pour hot water over the oatmeal, butter, and bouillon. Let it stand about 5 minutes. Stir in the powdered milk, cornmeal, and the egg. Add flour, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Knead 5-7 minutes, adding more flour if necessary to make a very stiff dough. Roll out on a floured board to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Bake for about 35-50 minutes. Allow to cool and place on wire rack to totally dry before storing. This makes about 1 to 1 1/2 lbs. cheers, Mike

Thanks, Avinet! The biscuits were actually like biscotti, they had the same crunchy texture. I will have to try this and the other recipie and let you know how well they liked them.
