Hi All Could anyone tell me if they have a good photo of a lime princess parrot? I recently bought a baby out of the nest, the father was a blue, the mother a yellow lime. Apparently if this baby is normal, it will be a double split? Is that correct but there is also a chance it could be lime? I'd just like to see a pic if anyone has a lime please. I've googled it but can't find a really good, clear picture. I'm thinking this bird is normal though, he has rather dark olive green colours on his wings etc. Thanks for your help in advance

Hi Flossy, To start with the genetics, the lime Princess is more correctly called a NSL ino (or Non-Sex-Linked lutino) and like the blue it is a recessive gene. The NSL ino mutation is quite variable, with colours ranging from yellow to the greenish yellow that is normally sold as lime, but they are all the same gene mutation. Some reasonable photos, which give an idea of the variation, are at www.whitepoppyaviaries.com.au/birds/australian/polytelis-parrots/princess-parrots/ - click on them for bigger images. Since the Blue and the Lime (NSL ino) are both recessive then any babies will be double split to both blue and NSL Ino. If the parents are not split then it will indeed be green - normal. To be blue the mother would have to be split blue and for it to be NSL ino (or lime if you prefer) the father would need to be split NSL ino. cheers, Mike

Thanks heaps Mike.....I really appreciate that! I'm sure it's normal, it's not fully feathered, but it has the olive green on it like normals etc. I will post a pic when I can, but I'm nearly 100% it's normal! The person that sold it to me keeps hassling me as she thinks its a lime etc......and shouldn't have sold it etc blah blah....honestly, the noise this thing makes she is welcome to have it back for the same price plus food! It eats like a machine!!
