I got this soup mix and was going to use it specifically for birds. I'm pretty sure most of the ebans there are safe, however i'm not sure what "white beans" are. i'm unsure if these are the same as lima beans which i believe aren't great for parrots. the beans included are: green lentils red lentils white bean kidney beans green split yellow split black eyed any ideas? also how long do i cook them? (i'm a male...) Attachments:

lol OMG and an honest male too (joking ) I use a bean mix that looks pretty similar to that and I cook it for a couple of hours........but not until they are mashed I also add brown rice to the mixture and when it is cooked I add mixed frozen veges and sometimes I add things like fresh carrots and pumpkin also.......just depends on how I am feeling and what I have in the house lol. I actually don't cook it that much anymore ........ or at the moment anyway. I used it mostly when weaning my babies.

When you say a few hours do you mean I simmer it for say 2 hours or so?

yes.........I bring mine to the boil then let it simmer for at least an hour, usually though it has been simmering for longer because I forget it........or I have it in my slow cooker.

So the white beans should be OK?

the mix I have (just looking at it now) has split green peas, red kidney beans, red lentils, a white bean (lima bean??) and a brownish stripey looking bean?? I have used this mix for about 7 or 8 years with no problems. It is "Mckenzies" Italian Style soup mix.

I put a lot of water in with mine..............more than cover the mix..............probably a few inches of water over the top of the mix..........does that make sense?? Maybe 1 litre of water to the mix and let it come to the boil, then turn down slightly then when it has boiled for maybe 15 mins.........turn down and let simmer. Or ......... put it in a slow cooker.........same thing cover with water..........quite a bit of water and let it simmer but keep a general eye on it to make sure it doesn't boil dry. Then drain and rinse and either freeze or just pop into the fridge.
