Well I woke up this morning to another beautiful day in paradise. The kings haven't been visiting as frequently as they did over at my other house. But this morning, I was greeted by 8 hungry beaks, and I just can't begin to tell you how good it felt to see some of them again. So I am thinking it would be very selfish of my not to share my morning delight. Hope all my Aussiebird friends have a wonderful day today! ;D

First one here this morning - he wanted his feed first! And I am being serenaded at the present moment by this beautiful magpie. I've got every reason to smile ;D

I love King Parrots!
We used to have a pair for several years but passed them on to a friend about 4 years ago when I went through some major health issues and we had to look at reducing the home flock a bit so my wife could cope. I still see them regularly and they always give me a great, and noisy, welcome.
We occasionally get them in our garden, but we live on the coastal plain and they prefer the higher ground - they are quite common on the hill behind us which is a couple of hundred metres above the plain.
Great photos
cheers,
Mike

Well I woke up this morning to another beautiful day in paradise. Later on this year we are planning a leisurely drive down to Canberra to visit younger daughter and old friends from when we lived there - driving down the back roads rather than the Newell Highway! Might have to call in at Copeton Dam for a look - if you can guarantee King Parrots cheers, Mike

Stunning photos Ellen. I've never owned one, but the Kings look like a very switched-on & intelligent bird.
Sounds like a great drive you have in mind Mike. The last time I went up the Newell Hwy it was the back road! While I was only a kid at the time, I can still remember the swarms of budgies, galahs and corellas. Lots of birds to see in Canberra, especially near the observatory. When I lived in Canberra for a year or so, I also liked going to the botanical gardens to see the Gippsland Water Dragons. If you get to do it in late spring you may also be lucky enough to see the males in their breeding colours. Their bodies seem to have a deep aqua-like wash to them and their chests tend to be bright blue and or yellow. Like many birds they seem to use colour to attract their mates. To see one of the large males about a metre long with spikes all the way down its back is a really impressive sight. They really do look like little dinosaurs and they are very plentiful in botanical gardens so I hope you take the time to see them. Like our little avian friends, Gippsland Water Dragons seem to have that irresistable charm that just draws you to them.
Gerard.

We lived in Canberra for over 20 years during my former life as a geologist, moving to the Sunshine Coast in 1991. Then my daughter moved back there in 1998 to study at ANU and then to work. So we have often done the drive down and back. Usually down via various inland routed, and return via the Coast roads. Both are a lot of fun - provided we were not in a hurry. And this time when we go it will definitely be leisurely.
The Botanic Gardens were one of our favourite places - especially the Rainforest Gully. They used to have evening concerts on the lawns which were great to take a picnic to.
Judy is scheduled to have a hip replacement operation at the end of April, so the trip isn't going to happen for a while - the spring I guess before she will be able to make a long drive.
cheers,
Mike

Mike, wish Judy all the best from all of us with the hip replacement. Once she gets fully mobile again she won't know herself. Looks like Ellen has already made up the spare bed for you both while you're meandering down the highway. Gerard

You are so lucky Ellen. A pair of Kings are on my wishlist one day. Good luck Judy with the hip replacement. I have to have a knee replacement in the near future.

Laraine, I did have a pair ;D I sold them when we first moved here. With so many of them just flying around in my backyard, I didn't have the heart to leave mine caged up watching all the others fly around. We sold them to a very good home and as far as I know they still have them. I don't have as many of them visit me here at this house, hopefully we will only be here for another 12 months or so, and then back to the other place. We go to the other house regularly - and I still feed them over there as well. On another note, we went over to the dam last night and had a BBQ tea - just the three of us - Mick, Chucky and myself. It was really windy and just a tad cold, but we braved it. Here is the big girl perched on her pillow waiting for her dinner!
