I own a female Scaly and my boyfriend owns a Rainbow (we didnt know the sex when we bought it), we never planned for them to bond but they have and now we have no idea what to do. Should we seperate them? Can anything come of this? If they do breed are the hybrids frowned apon? We love our pets, Marley and Riley, and they were purchased because we wanted companions and playmates. Now they're REALLY loved up and parting them results in screaming, so much screaming!
What should I do guys?
P.S, On a positive note they both seem to be more than happy to come out for scratches, cuddles and kisses. At least for now anyway.

Hi Steph, Rainbows and Scaly's can breed together and quite often do in the wild. Have a look at jenniferspryausbirding.blogspot.com.au/ - scan down the page a bit to see photos of lorikeet hybrids, including a typical Rainbow/Scaly cross. There is some variation in how they turn out but the photo there is typical of most. I'm not a fan of hybrids usually, but there is no real harm done with such a hybrid since both species are very common in aviculture. The babies should be hand raised so they can be sold as pets, and if they are nice natured then that will ensure they should sell OK. However note that in many states, including Queensland where I live, the breeding of hybrids is illegal so probably if they do breed it might be a good idea to not put adverts in the paper!!! Have your birds been sexed? 2 males or 2 females will carry on as if they are a true pair with lorikeets, even to the extent of appearing to mate and nest. If you get 4 eggs you know you have two females, and no eggs likely two males. I wouldn't separate them - they enjoy eaCH OTHERS COMPANY, BUT MAYBE DON'T PROVIDE A NEST BOX, THUS LESSENING THE CHANCES OF THEM TRYING TO BREED, AND IF THEY DO BREED (I hate the Caps Lock key ) then you can make sure the eggs don't hatch by shaking them vigorously to break the yolk. cheers, Mike

It would be a real shame to separate them. They obviously love each others company.
