Hey all I've been breeding charcoals for about 1 1/2 years now with great success and stunning specimens!! The whole time I have been looking for some decent intel on them and have found very little! Does anyone know a site where there is decent info on this little beauty! Also are there subspecies of charcoals besides the fawn! I have not seenany pics online besides one of a very poor breed of a pied charcoal! Any info would be great!

Firstly to correct some nomenclature - the charcoal Zebra is not a sub-species but a mutation of the Zebra Finch. Sub-species has a very well defined meaning under Linnaean binomial nomenclature for plants and animals, and any colour mutation does not fit into the definition of a sub-species. Charcoal Zebras are lovely little birds, and I started selling them in our shop around 2006 - used to get quite a few in, mainly grey body but some fawn. I used to have some at home but no longer keep them. There is an article at www.seqzfs.org/charcoal.htm and an abbreviated version of the same article with some photos is at members.optusnet.com.au/ellist/The%20CHARCOAL.htmMore photos are at geckodan.com/index.php?page=birds?finches - go down towards the bottom of the page and click on the thumbnails. A search of Google Images for "Zebra Finch Charcoal" turned up more photos If you are interested in Zebras, and especially if you are from SE Queensland, then it may be worth joining the South East Queensland Zebra Finch Society - www.seqzfs.org/cheers, Mike
