Hello all!!!! I'm hoping someone here can help me, I am getting desperate and need some advice, I have a gorgeous Alexandrine boy who is around 2 1/2 and he lives inside and its getting to the point where i may have to rehome him. He has a huge cage full of toys that are rotated plus he spends most days (I'd say around 4-5) of the week out of his cage with full access to the whole house, he gets lots of cuddles and attention and has a parrot mix diet with fresh fruit and veg every day. Heres the problem he wont stops screaming!!!!!! And i do mean screaming, not just the lovely noisy parrot chatter that i enjoy but actual ear piercing screaming and i dont know how to stop it. I desperately do not want to get rid of him so if anyone has any ideas at all for me i would be very happy, oh and the screaming isnt just when he is in his cage it doesnt seem to matter, although i would say there is def a little less when he is out. Its almost impossible to hold a conversation whenever i have friends over as he tries to compete with the noise its getting really bad He has a large outdoor cage but only put him in it when the weather is nice, i keep my house nice and warm and would never forgive myself if he got sick or worse!!

It sounds terrible Twiggy. I can't be of much assistance, but there are plenty of other people here who have a good knowledge of behavioral issues that may be able help.
Good Luck,
Gerard.

Hi Twiggy That doesn't sound like much fun at all! I have two Indian Ringnecks and their screaming sometimes drives my husband to distraction... and they seem to be worse when we have people over or when I'm on the phone. The key to stopping the screaming is finding out what the cause of it is and doing something about the cause... and there is always a cause but it can be really hard to find what it is! So, I would encourage you to try thinking about that and see what you can come up with... but in the meantime, I've got some other resources you can look at. Here are some links to on Barbara Heidenreich's website about screeching birds: goodbirdinc.blogspot.com.au/2008/05/stop-you-parrot-from-screaming-for.htmlgoodbirdinc.blogspot.com.au/2008/04/sun-conure-training-success-story.htmlSometimes screaming can come from boredom... and I know that you said that your bird has lots of toys... but if the toys aren't enough, you may need to get your bird to work for his food! As a parrot owner I had learnt about foraging and I did a bit of it but a visit to my avian vet taught me that I should have been doing much more of it. For some more information on foraging, check out these links: www.indianringneck.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11701&p=69400www.indianringneck.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13466www.parrotenrichment.com/ - this site has some free ebooks to download Increasing foraging made a huge difference to the behaviour of one of my birds. Also, do you do any positive reinforcement training with your bird? This can also be useful for providing mental stimulation. I find that it's fun for both me and my birds and it helps strengthen the bond between you. Let me know if you'd like more information on this. Good luck! I hope something there might help. Ellie.

Thank you for the replies!!Ellie there is some fabulous information there and will spend this afternoon trawling through those sites, i had heard of foraging but truly it just never occurred to me that he might actually need it. He sits on top of my fridge and has a bird gym up there and also a bucket of toys and i have to sav he loves just sitting on the edge of it and picking through them one by one and usually dumping them onto the floor, or our heads lol Avinet, will check this dvd out for sure. I really want him to be happy, I've never given up on any of my fur/feather/fin babies and had to give them awaw and I dont want to start with him : ( so once again a BIG thank you and will let you know how I go with it all!!!!

Inside - and I made a mistake - only 11 of them I was accidently including a Pum-head hen who shares a cage with two of them. Plus 14 other birds in the house. A couple of photos below give you some idea, with apologies for those who have seen them before! cheers Mike The CagesWaiting for a shower

I've only ever seen photos of Alexandrine colour mutations from other countries. I was beginning to wonder if you couldn't get them here... but I see they are alive and well in your house!
They are such great photos of them all hanging out waiting for the shower!
My two IRNs love a shower too!
Ellie.
