Hi and welcome to our Forum and to Australia. Sorry to have to tell you but Parrotlets are unavailable in Australia - there is an earlier thread about them, and the similar Lineolated (which are available, at a price) at aussiebirds.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=budgies&action=display&thread=4332&page=1There are lots of other species that might be considered as an alternative - possibly Quakers might be one to look at - smallish, very intelligent, can be good talkers, affectionate to their owners, active, and very very cute Baby Quakers become available later this year, usually from December onwards through the summer, since spring breeding is yet to start for them. Please tell us more about yourself, and also what you might be looking for in a bird. It is a bit early to get babies of most species at the moment, apart from cockatiels and budgies, but many species are winding up to breed in the spring at present and will be available before long. cheers, Mike

With a 3 year old I always suggest a budgie or a hand raised cockatiel - relatively low cost, and good with kids. Then get a Quaker or similar for yourself. Most parrots except budgies or cockatiels (and not always those two species I might add!) do not do well with very young kids.
cheers,
Mike
