Hello, my name is Laurie and we live in Minnesota in the USA. I adopted the most awesome baby Galah three weeks ago. I have already changed her name twice and need to settle on one quickly. I cannot continue to call her baby. She will be 6 months old next week. The breeder kept this clutch longer because there were problems. The first time parents attacked the babies as they hatched. The breeder pulled them the second she saw this, put them in a brooder and handfed them. One did not make it. My beautiful girl is missing three of her toes. Which just makes me love her more! She is able to perch but continues to fall alot. She has a huge cage and we put a padded rubber mat on the bottom, lowered the perches, put in rope perches and wrapped her wood perch in Vet wrap for traction. I did tons of research before choosing a Galah but hope to learn lots more here.

Hi Laurie and welcome to our Forum. Galahs are lovely fun birds, and they can be a joy to own. Sounds like she had a tough start to live, but I'm sure she will cope just fine. Galahs do tend to be a bit clumsy as youngsters, and her balance will improve as she learns to cope with missing toes. Did she lose three toes on the one foot or was it three toes across both feet? Generally a parrot with one front and one back toe on a foot has no problems - the issue becomes a bit more difficult when both of the front or back toes are missing on a foot. However it is amazing how a bird can adapt. I have a Princess parrot that basically has no toes on either foot. They were bitten off when the previous owner thought it would be alright to put her into an aviary with breeding lovebirds By the time they realised it wasn't alright she had almost no toes left on either foot and they dumped her into our pet shop for us to pay the vet to fix her up. She copes just fine - we have had her in our retirement aviary for around 4 years now and she is a happy little bird - photo below. Hope you enjoy your stay here, and remember photos are always welcome cheers, Mike Princess Parrot with no toes

Thank you Mike. She is missing two front toes on one foot and one front toe on other. I hopefully added a picture where you can see. Your birdie is beautiful! Now if I can just settle on an awesome name for this awesome girl! Attachments:

Ow she is a cutie. Welcome to the forum. We had a Galah called Saffie, because she/he reminded me of a beautiful pink sapphire. Unfortunately we lost her. They are such loving birds.
