Hi I was wondering if anyone has any help with tick poisening in a magpie. My son found a magpie who couldn't fly and barely walk on our property. He brought her home and said she looked like she was really drunk, not a big bird but with good condition on her and glossy black and white feathers. As I checked her over I found 2 large paralysis ticks attached under her jaw. I wasn't aware that native birds were affected by ticks but rang our local vet and he said it was rare but it did happen and to remove the ticks and keep her quiet. I did give her a small amount of watered down milk with a small amount of bicarb soda in it which was something my nana many many years ago used to help treat tick poisening with dogs if they were able to swallow. Later in the evening I checked on her and she was very much worse and created a nest of an old shirt to keep her from
Literally falling flat on her face fully expecting by the morning she would not have made it. Great suprise the next morning when she was warbling and able to stand with her wings balancing her. Next day also rescued a baby galah in a terribly poor state so took both birds into the local vet. She was obviosly still wobbly but much better. She is eating lean mince and mix i got from the vet. He said to release her today. Unfortunately, with her mates calling her i went to release her but she was unable to fly. Her wings look fine (the vet said there seemed no injury to them) but she wont try to flap them. Does anyone have this experience ... Perhaps she is younger than we thought, her tail is a bit scappy looking. Could it be that being contained in a cage four days could be an issue. Amy help or suggestions would be very much appreciated I would love to get her back to her family Thanks Jen
