they say things come in threes well yesterday we came across th most beautiful Little Rufous Fantail. I thought it may have been another paralysis tick like Maggie as it seemed unable to fly and was very wobbly. I couldn't find any ticks so finally figured out what type of bird it was then gave it the same treatment as Maggie wrapped it in a polar fleece with a warm hot water bottle and some Maggie mix with water. This morning I had it nestled and rather foolishly had a window open and it must have been feeling better because it flitted out so fingers crossed it will be ok! Maggie is at a Fawna bird experts to go in a large aviary at Taree for a while until she is flying better and can be released. Finally Raggles the baby Galah. I can't help it ugly little duckling he is we are all smitten and (pls touch wood) he is defying the odds and our local vets advice about not getting attached to him. He as a full blown appetite and can't get enough food although is refusing to drink water on his own and I still have to give it to him by syringe ... And my gosh doesn't he make a noise if I'm not quick enough. He has been on the antibiotics for three days now and his poop is a much better colour I think ... Though I'm not really sure what it should look like to be honest it's more firmer and less bright green anyway. At he moment he has crawled across the lounge and is grooming me chirping and grinding his beak and grooming me. His mum and dad have been visiting everyday and I put him out if it's warm to spend time with them but a little worried about a crow taking interest in him ... They chirp snd talk all the time. Do you have any idea how to teach him to drink by himself? How long/old before these birds learn to fly. Thanks Jenny

He will learn to drink when he is ready - generally you do not have to give them water - if they need it and the food isn't providing enough water he will discover how to drink when he needs to. That is usually after they start flying when they start the weaning process in normal development. My guess is that he has flown already - that is how he ended up on the ground - he will have flown to leave the nest hollow but if he was weak from an illness then it might have been the only flight he has done so far. Once he has regained some strength he will be trying to fly again - give him every opportunity in an enclosed room and once he is able to fly and make controlled landing he might be ready to rejoin his parents - if they are still hanging around that is. cheers, Mike

hi Mike we see the Maggie everyday just about she looks well and is with a small family that live on ours and our neighbours land. Raggles the baby galah seems to be going leaps and bounds and yes his parents are still visiting everyday but so unfortunately has a little eagle who has two babies she is feeding. I have been taking him out side and although not a brilliant flyer has managed around 50 metres and stuck a few landings on fencing as well. Just not getting height yet. I am very cautious when I do this because the eagle is quite clever and has swooped in on one occasion watching him Nearly every time. He has gained weight and is drinking by himself when he needs to thankfully, very lively and inquisitive .. He thinks my foot is his personal elevator onto the lounge. But I am a little worried as he seems to have a bald section from his croup down his tummy, he is always grooming himself. His beak also has fresh growth, he loves cuttlefish, is this normal? You can actually feel the weight he has gained but is fussy with what he eats, mainly picking out stripped sunflower seeds and leaving the rest. Although he does like corn on the cob and celery to. I must admit I am worried he might have pbfd although the other galahs look quite healthy when they visit. Thanks for all your help Jenny
