Hey, I would like to make a list of birds that are currently available in Australia. I see birds like splendid fairy wrens and kingfishers in peoples aviaries but im not sure weather they were caught or brought. So add the name of birds you know you cna buy in Australia below.

Each state has it's own regulations about the keeping of Australian native birds. Since you live in Queensland the list of native birds you can keep and the regulations that control how you can obtain them is to be found at www.ehp.qld.gov.au/register/p01389aa.pdf - any native bird must be from captive bred stock and not taken from the wild. In Queensland you can keep any exotic (non-native) species that has been bred in Australia from legally imported stock, which is a bit of a problem in that apart from a brief period in the 1990's, it has been 60 or more years since legal importation has been possible, and in the meantime there has been quite a bit of illegal smuggling. Any bird which the authorities determines has been bred from illegally imported birds is likely to be seized. I have a list in a spreadsheet of those species which were known to be in Australia around 2000 and which was accepted at the time by the Federal Government. However it is too lengthy to reproduce here. The best way to find out what is available in your area is to join your local avicultural society, if you have not done so already. You have a very good one in your area - the Gold Coast Aviary Bird Assoc. which meets monthly at the Mudgeeraba Showgrounds. The Secretary is Sue Brown on 55226666 cheers, Mike
