One of my pair of budgies was laying a clutch and a cockatiel pair (who had tried nesting twice previously) laid a couple of eggs in the budgies nest. Both eggs hatched, one baby died but the other is still alive. I'd say they're about 2-3days old max. Should I pull the baby cockatiel for handrearing or do I trust that the budgie will raise it to 3 weeks for me. I was planning on handrearing it either way. I've never handreared a bird from basically day dot. Am I safer to just monitor them, and pull the baby if need be? Cheers, TIA

The budgies will probably feed it OK - at least for a week or more. However it will depend very much on the budgies. If they have strong parenting instincts it will be OK but if it is their first nest for instance there is a chance they will lose interest.
My suggestion is to monitor the baby - check it twice a day and you want to see a nice full crop. If the crop is empty then check it an hour later and if it is still empty, when plenty of food is available for the parents, then you can assume it isn't getting fed and it will need to be removed for hand rearing. Even if the budgies are doing a good job I would remove it by 14 days since it could start to suffer from the possible inability of the budgies to give it adequate amounts of food.
cheers,
Mike
