Hello, Several months ago I posted about my male Nanday Buddy 9 years old I purchased for my female Toni 12 years old as a companion. Just recently Buddy has gone in Toni's cage and refuses to come out. He will come out and walk around the outside of the cage and go back in. Up until this time they remained in their separate cages. They don't fight or perch together I just thought it odd because Toni is cage bound and I was surprised she would allow Buddy in her cage. Do you think this is a step toward mating? Thanks.

Hi Christine, been a while since we have heard from you Sounds like Toni has decided that Buddy is OK and he likewise is happy with her company. Before their recent co-habiting did Toni accept Buddy around her cage and in it, or is it only recently that she tolerated that? It is likely a step towards mating - and spring is coming in two or three months for you in the USA. If they start to perch next to each other it might be time to think about a nestbox - if you want them to breed that is. I've never bred Nandays, so I am unsure of their mating behaviour - I would expect to see some sort of mutual preening to start up if they were getting that friendly If they start to do that then it might be time for the box to go in. From a quick check of some references a deeper box is best - 18" deep by 12" x 12" and with wood shavings on the bottom - pine is fine. They apparently try to throw all the shavings out of the box so keep replacing as they remove it. cheers, Mike

Hello, Yes its been awhile. I always read the new posts but rarely have anything to contribute. Buddy has been inside Toni's cage for the last week day and night. Before this he would sit on top of her cage. Thank you for all the good advice if anything happens I will let you know. Not too much new going on I did purchase a Green Winged McCaw she is five months old now and still on two hand feedings. She, Cherry, is lots of fun but destroying my kitchen table. Cherry and Ra, the grey, do not get along. Most of my birds don't mix except the pineapple and sun conure they are still smitten with each other. Well, I just had the conures DNA'd but I don't have the results yet maybe they are a match. I will let you know. Have a great day. :)Christine
