Im looking for a new bird. But i dont know which one to go for. I would like one in the next fwo months or so but i think princess breeding season is over isnt it? How easy is it to come across one in Western Australia at around March? Hand reared too. Ive owned a weiro before, but she was really nasty. We rescued her. She had a deformed wing from abuse and couldnt fly so i guess nasty wasnt her fault xD sometimes she was nice to us and she would climb up the blinds and just sat up the top sleeping. I taught her to wolf whistle . Can both birds live together? I was thinking of getting a weiro first for a year or 2 and then bringing a princess into it. I dont want my weiro getting nasty with me if i decide on a weiro. (Id call them cockatiels but im just lazy with typing xD) Can princess parrots and weiros live together? And which one would you reccommend?

Welcome to the Forum, hope you enjoy your time here. I've had a pair of pet Princess Parrots for some 16 years, and they co-existed in the house with a flock of cockatiels - up to 10 cockatiels at one stage. We still hae 4 tiels, all around 20 years old. During that time we have had some issues with having Cockatiels and Princesses - the main problem being that the Princesses can be a bit of a bully at times - mainly deciding to have some fun by knocking a tiel off the perch. The female Princess is the main culprit - the male is pretty good. There has never been any attempt to do actual injury, it is more a case of "I'm bored, lets have a bit of fun" and the cockatiels are such mild mannered birds they cop it. We have never housed them in the same cage -always separate cages although usually alongside each other. I do think that the male if he was on his own would be no problem, it is the female that has a somewhat twisted sense of fun I think that if you had a male Princess and a male cockatiel you would be unlikely to have any problems even if they share a good sized cage. Have a look at the video of a Princess chatting up a young cockatiel - one I took in my old pet shop. cheers, Mike

Did you take that video? I just shared it on facebook cuz i thought it was the cutest thing ive ever seen!!! Both birds would be male i like to have some whistling in my garden and i dont want to breed so i dont want to deal with females reproductive problems. I had a rat that got an ovary tumor and it was awful im sure rats and birds are different but i dont want to go through that again. They would have a rather large cage outside but id also like a little open top cage when im home so i can have them in the house i dony want my birdy to be lonely but i would also like a variation of species :3 Thanks for the info! No to start shopping for supplies so im all ready.

Yes I took the video - I owned the pet shop for some 20 years until closing it and retiring. The cockatiel was just a young hand raised bird while the Princess - called Paris - was boarding with us for a few days. He was a great talker - probably knew around 15 to 20 phrases. The African Grey at the end of the video was Ernie - my own bird who is still with us.
If you plan to keep the birds outside then try to get both together - a single cockatiel or Princess kept outside isn't going to be a happy bird - they need company.
cheers,
Mike

They would be mostly inside. Just outside for some air when im not home but I think I will get them both together. So y they know each other from the start What are the chances of getting a young hand tame princess in about two months? Slim? I might have to wait D:

I had a quick look on Gumtree and the following caught my eye www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/perth-cbd/birds/handraised-princess-parrots/1013074975I would suggest keeping an eye on Gumtree - I searched for Princess Parrot - and see what is coming up. Go for DNA sexed babies - Princesses can be a bit tricky to sex before 6 months. I suspect in April there will mostly be aviary raised birds that haven't sold yet. It will be a bit late for hand raised birds. That time of year is also pretty quiet for cockatiels, at least in SE Qld. They usually moult in the summer and will not resume breeding until the moult is well and truly over - usually in March or April so babies are a couple of months after that. cheers, Mike
