I got a rather old cage from a friend and only got it home today, it's worse then i thought, the roof is totally rusted, even crumbling and the metal frame is covered in rust. The metal itself is still as strong as ever. The frame is still standing but is covered in rust and chipping at the middle joint. I water blasted it to an inch of it's life, a lot of the paint flew straight off. It's drying overnight now but i don't know if i can safely use it for my bird... a Galah i'm picking up on Saturday
The bar frames of the cage are okay and i might be able to pry them off as they are tack welded on and make a temp cage for a week.... I have a travel cage but it's too small for that long of a time to keep a new bird in...
Would anyone be able to help or give advice? I have new paint for the cage and sandpaper to strip all the rust.
If i can make it last a while longer then a week i can buy a better cage...

It isn't really possible to say what you can do - it is the sort of problem you have to be there and see the cage first hand to make any sensible suggestions. The essential need is that it has to be escape proof, and that means also that the bird cannot chew it's way out. And Galahs can be very effective chewers of thin aviary wire.
good luck
cheers,
Mike

The problem was solved! Had a friend who was a vet nurse come over and take a look at it, deemed it unsuitable and i made him a nice and solid perch for the daytime and he'll sleep in the travel cage at night till Sunday when we pick up his proper cage
