Hi All,
I'm new to AussieBirds, I joined because the forum is very educational and we are currently looking for a new member of the family...
I'll give you the big story so you know where I'm coming from...
Recently our long-term-live-in-by-choice possum has passed on, after 9 wonderful years and many babies.
We have sporadic visitors to our farm on the Sunshine Coast, mainly of American & European tourists and Aussie schools and campers looking for an Australian experience, but my partner also works on the farm with youth at risk, often in 24/7 care arrangements, so he's home virtually all the time.
Our house is not traditional, we have several buildings in which we live, all open air (roofed but not fully walled in), with most having an open fireplace for warmth in winter.
We have a busy household of dogs, chickens, horses & cows (thats the domestic ones) as well as wild butcher birds (again by choice, brought in by their parents), lorikeets, bluefaced honeyeaters and some native tadpoles have just popped up in our mini garden pond, so they're being maintained as well (lucky I can find lots of lily pads!), we are both hopeless animal lovers and have strong long term commitments to animal care.
Having looked around and done some research, I think we have the time, attitude, environment and capacity to have a large parrot in our life...so we are looking for an Australian Parrot, not fussy on what species, sex or age, just needs to be healthy & friendly. (as you can see this will be a first for us, and although animal care generally comes naturally to us, birds are a whole different ball game, so want to start out well!)
My utmost hope is for our bird to become fully free range at some point. The ideal is to have a cage simply as somewhere for our parrot to go by choice when he/she wants quiet time and for safety at night time...
We recently purchased a 'typical' cocky cage (about 60cm square all around) as well as a larger, standing cage (160cm high, 70cm wide, 60cm deep)...
Anyone who can point me in the right direction or offer advice would be great, thanks for reading!!
