Hi everyone, I am completely confused about the gender of my bird... I did breed budgies, so usually I can tell the gender (Blue for boys, Tan/brown for girls) but I just can't tell. From behavior I would say 'he' is a boy, but I've never had a tame girl before... also the cere bit- the top part is blue but the sides are tan, and some parts are still pink like when I got 'him' at 2 weeks old. Can anyone help? Also 'he' is a Recessive Pied Greywing (Possibly might be Clear Flight- but he still has black eyes and he's almost five months old)
Thanks in advance ;D

A photo would help but from your description with some brown on the sides of the beak I would suggest it is a female, and that the brown will spread over the beak replacing the blue. Male budgies at any age don't normally have any brown on the beak, but many females will start out with a pale blue beak that turns brown with maturity.
Female budgies can be very tame - the first pet budgie we owned was a lovely female - very tame, and I have seen and tamed many many female budgies over the years.
cheers,
Mike

thank you ;D I will try to get a photo, but she/he doesn't sit still long enough, and also she/he is scratching a lot- could is suspect this is mites or is this normal? This is mainly on the lower back and flight feathers...

The scratching is probably normal - especially if she is moulting at present. If she is an inside bird then mites and lice are rare - if she is an aviary bird then it is possible but I would look to see evidence of them before spraying.
cheers,
Mike

thanks ;D I've treated her at the same time as with my other birds (I can't remember what its called but it does for scaly face, airsac, mites and lice, abd there was another one but i can't remember it...) she's in moult because she was clipped... She has been outside, accidentally, and she could fly (It wasn't that long ago) she was ontop of my step-dad's head and she looked around then came back inside sitting on his head... i think he forgot she was there...

thanks ;D I've treated her at the same time as with my other birds (I can't remember what its called but it does for scaly face, airsac, mites and lice, abd there was another one but i can't remember it...) There are two main treatments for parasites other than worms. The first is the spray-on that can be purchased from a pet shop as a mite and lice spray (various brands) that will do exactly that - kill mites and lice on the body of the bird. It will not kill air-sac mites and very rarely scaly-face mites. The second is Ivermectin, usually only available from a vet or through a bird club. I'm not aware of any pet shop selling it, at least legally (we used to sell it "under the counter" ). It comes in two different formulations, either as a (liquid) dose given orally usually by a crop needle, or a liquid which is absorbed through the skin and one or more drops are placed on the skin on the back of the neck. Ivermectin will kill any blood sucking parasite so it kills air-sca mite, scaly-face mite and nest mites, but will not kill lice (which don't suck blood). cheers, Mike

A photo is worth a thousand words Definite male - that purple rather than blue colour cere is typical of the male recessive pied budgie. The females usually have a pale brown, almost creamy cere. cheers, Mike

Thank you, I wasn't sure as I've never had a reseccive (I can't spell today...) budgie where I couldn't tell the gender. I did have a girl of the same mutation but she died before I got him... Was very bossy though.
