Hi all, I've rescued a lesser yellow crested cockatoo from a bad situation, he has a badly overgrown and scissored beak. How long should I wait to have it trimmed and can anyone recommend a good vet to do the job? I live in central west NSW

Hi all, I've rescued a lesser yellow crested cockatoo from a bad situation, he has a badly overgrown and scissored beak. How long should I wait to have it trimmed and can anyone recommend a good vet to do the job? I live in central west NSW Hi and welcome to the Forum As you might expect, most avian vets in NSW are around Sydney however there are two I know of out west of the Great Divide. Details below. Christopher Collins Piper Street Veterinary Clinic 10 Piper Street, Tamworth NSW 2340 02 6766 3088 Tony Gestier Vetafarm 3 Bye Street Wagga Wagga NSW 2650 02 6933 0400 If neither of these are not near you then I guess it is a matter of phoning around the local vets and seeing if any claim any expertise with birds. I am a little confused by your identification of the bird being a "lesser yellow crested cockatoo". Basically we only have the one cockatoo with a yellow crest in Australia - the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo - with no other varieties, although others do exist in Indonesia. cheers, Mike

Hi Mike, thanks for the quick reply, i'll give those guys a call and see what they recommend. Yep, I've been doing some research and it seems that he's probably an Indonesian bird, don't know how he came to be with the person I got him from but I think he may have been hand tame, as he's pretty relaxed, but hasn't come out of his cage yet. I guess he could be a corella/cocky hybrid, but I'm pretty sure he' a lesser yellow crested, they are critically endangered in the wild, not sure if I need a licence of something! I have an 8 year old greater sulphur crested and this bird is nearly half his size, with pale blue skin around the eye. I wish I knew how old he was! He is dirty, black on his face, could this be an indication of old age?

Oh, is forum only for Aussie cockatoos? No, it caters for all birds, just gets the name from being base din Australia so mostly Australian members. Although members form other countries are more than welcome. I would love to see a photo of the bird, especially with the crest erect, and if possible next to your normal Aussie Sulphur. From your description it may well be a Lesser Sulphur-crested, certainly the size and blueish eye surround sounds right. If it is a Lesser then it should also have a yellow patch on the side of the head. The other possibility is a cross between an Aussie Sulphur and a Little Corella - that could give the small size. And if it is a Lesser Sulphur it does not need a license however there are some issues to consider that I won't bother with until we are sure of it's identity. cheers, Mike
