Hello. Checking through the nest boxes of the budgies the other day and one of the chicks has red eyes, after a few more days and the feather colours starting to show I discovered the feathers are all pure yellow. What colour mutation would this be called and how will I sex it? Cheers Paul

What colour mutation would this be called and how will I sex it? Cheers Paul Hi Paul, If the baby keep it's pure yellow feathers with red eyes it will be a Lutino budgie. However it may have other genes in the genetic makeup as well, and some other subtle colours can appear as it finishes feathering out. So it is tentatively a Lutino. Let us see some photos when it is fledged. Sexing is much the same as normal - however the colour difference between male and female ceres is less distinct but still recognizable once Lutinos mature at 4 to 6 months. Lutino is a se-linked mutation so it may be possible to sex it based on the colour. Since you have apparently been surprised by a yellow baby appearing that suggests the mother is not a Lutino which means the father must be split to Lutino. And if the father is split to lutino then the Lutino baby must be female due to the way sex-linked mutations are passed form parents to babies. cheers, Mike

Hi Mike, Thanks for that. The father is a blue budgie, relatively normal colouration from what I can tell. The mother is a weird green colour, with a bit of yellow. Not sure what colour it would be called either. I am definitely no expert on budgie colours. Cheers Paul ps dont know how to transfer photos from my phone

Cheers Paul ps dont know how to transfer photos from my phone The lutino baby will then be a female from the likely genetic makeup of the parents. One in 4 babies should be female Lutino. Can't help with the photo transfer bit - my phone skills are struggling with basic SMS! cheers, Mike
