We had to euthanise Jello a few days ago. she was our pet lutino Indian Ringneck and was about 21 years old, with us having obtained her when she was 3 year old. She was the mate of Sasha, our 22 year male, and they had been together as house pets for the 18 years we had her, and in that time bred many beautiful babies. Sasha babies, as we used to call them, were renown here for their temperament - mostly inherited, I have to admit, from Sasha since Jello was not always a perfect ringneck and did give the occasional bite! She was however a magnificent mother, all her babies were well looked after and even when we had taken them for hand rearing she would continue to be interested in them and share the feeding duties with us. We still have a male from her last nest at the end of last year so he is looking like a permanent resident now.
Jello's death wasn't unexpected - she had been declining for about 3 months with pancreatic problems, believed to be cancer. By last Tuesday it became obvious that her quality of live was no longer adequate so the decision to euthanase was taken.
We though that Sasha would have a hard time afterwards, after 18 years together, but surprisingly he seems to be unaffected - a bit clingier to us maybe, but he mostly is hanging out with our oldest Alexandrines, Alex, that was his friend before Jello arrived.
I am attaching a couple of photos - firstly of Jello feeding one of her babies while Sasha watches on, and the second of Jello and Sasha together. Also I did a post about them a couple of years ago at aussiebirds.proboards.com/thread/10702/introducing-sasha-jello
cheers,
Mike
