Hi everyone, One of my new Canary hens has four babies! I am a bit confused about one of the babies though- I know that some have red eyes when they are young but these go black (like the other babies in the nest) but this one is the third youngest and has red eyes, and the youngest ones eyes have already gone black- I was wondering what would cause this? Maybe certain mutations? This is just because none of my canary chicks have kept their red eyes and I haven't seen any mutations with red eyes... so far I will upload some photo's later when I can... Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance What colour are the babies? Cinnamon canaries have a red eye - or usually more a plum coloured eye - which soon turns black as the baby matures. In adults the plum colour can still be discerned if a bright light is shone into the eye - or maybe picked up by a camera flash. A true red eye into adulthood would occur in an ino mutation (usually called lutino) but from what I can remember that is a rare mutation in the canary world. How old is the baby? maybe it is just a bit slower turning black cheers, Mike

The hen has red eyes in the right light, the father does not, 2 of the other babies did have red eyes, but this ones are different they are yellow (pale/cream yellow) and varigated, this one is also pure white... I did try and get some phtoto's but she won't let me...

I haven't been able to get any photo's of the baby- his/her mother won't let me at certain times, or he/she is underneath the other babies... here is a photo of the parents- one is yellow but always has a white patch between her wings/on the shoulders, and the father is a bright yellow variegated (I think...) They aren't the best photo's but the white in the photo's on the hen isn't just the light...

Pretty standard sort of colours - I had thought perhaps the male had cinnamon colouring but he doesn't - so it is a bit of a mystery. I'll look forward to the baby photos when you get the chance to take them cheers, Mike
