Hello fellow bird lovers.. well what a dilemna i have . I bought a boy and what I was told, girl cockatiel about 9 months ago. The male is definitely a boy, but the supposed female i am now not to sure. She is very agressive towards the male.. no love shown.. she makes a LOT of noises .. and carries on all morning with a racket .. is smaller than him and has orange cheeks .. I did buy her as a female but wether they were DNA checked or not i have no clue. So I guess my question is, can a female make whistling sounds? and why are her cheeks red? I was told she comes from a whole line of different coloured ones, including cinnamon, lutino, the works..She has the bars under her tail though ... please help.

A young male partly coloured up and not much over 9 months old. Male cockatiels start out looking like females, but start to colour up into their male colours at around 6 months. By 12 -14 months they are fully coloured males. Those barred tail feathers will soon start to moult out and be replaced with solid dark grey feathers - possibly some have already moulted and been replaced. Before you start to see this colour change happening the young males will start to whistle and produce a variety of calls - something females don't do - they just shout. This male vocalizing generally starts by 3 months although some may be 4 months before whistling. Also note that a grey female cannot carry the genes for lutino and cinnamon and still be grey - if she was carrying those genes she will show the colour. Lutino and cinnamon have a sex-linked inheritance meaning the females cannot be split to those colours. Either they show the colour or they do not carry the gene. If a seller tell you a female cockatiel is split to lutino or cinnamon they don't know what they are talking about - and are also unlikely to be able to sex young cockatiels - as happened in this case. If you are wanting to breed, and require aviary birds, it is best to get 6 month or older birds that can be accurately sexed.frm appearance and behaviour. cheers, Mike
